FINALIST Auto Design & Styling sketch

News my concept sketch for the Auto Design & Styling Adam meets Eve partner competition has been shortlisted from 400 entries you can view and vote for your best sketch at
 https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.571025269586931.1073741847.188853437804118&type=1
It was a quick speed sketch started on a Samsung Tablet and then finished on a Wacom Cintiq using only Sketchbook pro 6.
The spark for the concept came from the line tension of the original Adam Opel sketch showing the bold raised form around the door handle and the recessed scratch on the door.
I wanted the overall theme to be short compact feminine but with muscle
The graphic had to be very strong the stance ridged and the nomenclature had to dominate the front grille
The two tone for fashion and keeping the weight down in the rear roof area.
The high cut off front fenders are to keep it strong and short in side view to match the very squared of rear quarters with almost no overhang and a very square plan view.

For my Sunday afternoon speed sketch session I knocked out some very quick Nazca concepts. I haven't trimmed them they are just raw of the screen the first one was done on my Samsung slate smart PC and the other 2 were done on a Wacom Cintiq.........Please try and make some time to sketch something different to what you are normally working on just to keep your creative juices fresh.........just make time to enjoy your sketching ........Remember its fun

The Art of Drawing

Over the last day or so I have been using the new Wacom Bamboo Feel on my Samsung Smart pc and Galaxy note instead of the supplied S pen which also runs Wacom technology.

Obviously it felt more like a real pen it had thickness to hold a bit more ergonomics and most important weight that I could balance over my first finger, it was smooth on the tablet surface and seemed to have a lot more sensitivity giving me a more Cintiq drawing experience. Not that the supplied S pen was no good ( I do like the way they are stored in the back of the tablets making them very compact to travel with ) but It did make me think that with all this digital drawing I’m doing every day I really do miss my old pens pencils and brushes to draw and paint with, even my old airbrushes were very well balanced and the length of a new Eagle Prismacolor pencil was a pleasure to use as I would balance it between my first finger and thumb.

So the Bamboo was very well made comes in different colours even a carbon fibre version but it was just a pen  even the new Cintiq pens are a bit normal and when you think when I use them on the different screens they can be a pencil, paintbrush, marker or airbrush . So wouldn’t it be a good exercise to design digital pens that are more like our old artists tools with the weight length and balance and be a bit creative with them so using my new Bamboo I did some speed concept sketches on my Samsung tablet. For reference I dug out some of my old paint brushes and some old traditional Chinese long handled brushes, my favourite Japanese long shaft sketching ball point and an original Prismacolor pencil and the new Wacom 13HD pen which has a beautiful carry case.

Nazca project speed sketches

Haven't worked with Tony Granger for a while but I heard he was working on this new Nazca project which is basically 3 hulls of the same size and shape making it extremely stable. So just to get the creative juices going I did these very quick Sketchbook pro speed sketches which also show the versatility of the concept. you can read more at grangerdesigns.net

Go Bombers

Busy weekend Ree and Myself took our 3 month old grandson Cody to his first football game unfortunately our team the bombers were beaten which made this classic image of his mum and dad contemplating what went wrong at the end of the game with little Cody wearing the Bomber jumper I bought for him.

Sunday afternoon speed sketch

Even though it was Mothers day I did manage to do a speed sketch when everyone had a rest in the afternoon. Believe it or not this was one of the original ideas I had sketched when the Nullarbor racers were first created, that's why its important to revisit old ideas with fresh eyes anyway enjoy and have a go......remember a speed sketch is created very quickly don't spend to much time on it otherwise you will start changing the design and you may not finish it due to loosing that initial spark.

Yacht concepts

Found these old concept sketches in my yacht folder thought it might inspire me to do some new concepts, or any one else that wants to .....Cheers

Top one was for a twin hulled mega yacht.

the bottom one was a quick concept for Tony Granger design of a sport Catamaran. which I have posted recently as a tutorial demo.

Americas cup catamaran tragic accident

Sad news today Andrew "Bart" Simpson, the British Olympic champion sailor, has died after his catamaran Team Artemis capsized off the coast of California during trials for the Americas cup, these craft are experimental state of the art catamarans the F1 of the sea.
this follows the disastrous crash of Oriacle the American defender.

The popular father of two, who was a member of the Swedish America’s Cup team led by his Olympic teammate Iain Percy became trapped under the hull of the AC72 after it flipped near Treasure Island in San Francisco bay catapulting all 11 crew members into the water.
Recovery services arrived to rescue the crew but were unable to revive Simpson, despite attempts by an onboard doctor and other doctors ashore.

Bernie Walsh goes 3D

With the help of Rob Veitch from Delineate with some excellent training I have now seriously entered the world of  Autodesk Alias 3D design, my first project was the recent speed pod I had been playing with as a very simple concept. Being a designer and always working with concepts sketches to show the surface I found it challenging to think of the surfaces as a math model but after approaching it like clay modelling and working under Robs guidance I soon got the hang of it. The results were then put into Alias Showcase and the results you can see still very basic but a good start

Does size matter... Wacom Cintiq 13HD

The new Wacom Cintiq 13HD as you can see is a little bit bigger than my Samsung slate SMART PC. But when you get sketching you don't notice it as much a little bit like the difference between the 24hd and the 22hd.

Wacom Cintiq 13HD Demo SKETCH

I have just finished this sketch demo on the new Wacom Cintiq using Sketchbook pro, after using my Samsung tablets so much it was great to use a slightly larger screen drawing feel was much the same, all being HD. Portability was restricted because you still need to plug it into a computer....the Samsung smart pc worked well, so I could sketch on my lap just like a sketch pad or more comfortably in my studio if I wanted to move around or sit in the comfy chair. I started the speed pod sketch with some very quick sketch lines then cleaned it up and did some more accurate scaling front and top view which I will use later for a Alias 3D model. I used the girl sketch to work out the scale and proportions, after that I just went through the layers colouring it in, and finished with some alternate backgrounds....ENJOY AND LEARN

Cool designs

Mazda will exhibit the KODA chair The Chair is, in fact, very relevant in several ways. Beyond uniting the motion and artistry captured by KODO, the chair is also a perfect fit for the Salone Internazionale del Mobile – the world’s leading furniture fair and the largest single attraction during Milan Design Week.

samsung sketch

Meant to say I used my Samsung smart pc tablet with Sketchbook pro 6 to do the black car demo.

Black is best

Thought I would do a black car demo after numerous requests for a demo on how to sketch a black car. I have used an older series of sketches below showing how you can easily evolve a design and change colours in Sketchbook Pro 6.Note that not changing the view makes it very easy to change the design form while still understanding the concept
Apart from the colour I also revised the design to be an electric power plant with easy replaceable electro replenished power packs.

Nullarbor Racers

Haven't done any new concepts for Nullarbor racers for a while but did play with a new graphic.
