Colour and Form

Well another year starts and another new group of 1st year Industrial Design students learn to draw digitaly in the RMIT Wacom lab.They start off getting used to drawing on Cintiqs using Alias Sketchbook with some basic form and colour hue lessons.

First sign of autum

We are now seeing the first signs of autumn the most colourful of the seasons up here on our mountain, and it reminds me of what colour is all about.Its all around us we just need to really look. When you see a yellow rose in the garden or a little red plane or some motorbikes parked in the street if you look closely you will see that it's made up of numerous yellow or red colour hues caused by reflections highlights and shadows.
So to all my students when we sketch a product really study the colour hues that make it that colour.

Masterclass student concepts

For the second masterclass session Wacom Australia kindly helped out with the loan of a new Cintiq 24HD for the students to trial with some very positive feed back and some great results. I have included some of the students work.....progress has been fast with the almost one on one tuition

Car sketching masterclass

The first all day session went well and all students worked hard and produced some great work.We mainly concentrated on form,colour and the stance of the vehicle.

Summer Masterclasses

Hi All, I know I have had a lot of requests for summer classes which I fully intended to run but due to serious family problems was not able to at the time. I know its short notice but I am now able to run some masterclasses,they will be small classes of 4 so you will get more personnel tuition.......... anyway the first is a car sketching masterclass...I can also run concept sketching classes other days if I get enough interest.Cheers Bernie

Inkling TV doodle

Last night while watching tv.....which was a bit boring I found myself doodling some craft with the inkling, just shapes... anyway it inspired me enough to throw it onto the DTU and do a quick speed sketc..... this is the result. Hope it inspires you to do something different.

The Sherlock kids wheel barrow has arrived for Christmas 2011.

The Sherlock kids wheelbarrow is now avaliable for Christmas.
Ian Wong from ejo design was commissioned to design a child's version of Australia's leading wheelbarrow brand - Sherlock. Ian asked me to do some concept sketches which I did using sketchbook pro on the wacom tablet. Innovative features like the front bumper, soft handle grips, and the use of the foot to lean the product against a wall for storage were adopted from the sketches in the final design. The overall proportions are critical to make a child version reflect the full size product. These quick sketches allow a designer great flexibility to refine the geometry and proportions before CAD modelling. Ian and Charles , one of our RMIT graduates, did mockups and preliminary 3D models always referring back to these original concept sketches. Ian and Ross Williams worked on the production detailing and tooling CAD files. A great team effort.

Inkling on top of the world

Yesterday I was working up on Mt Buller in Victoria's high country couldn't carry a lot with me but I did manage to squeeze in the inkling to do some sketches early in the morning

Inkling sketchbook designer sketch tutorial

Hi All,I discovered if I sketched too quick with the inkling when I opened it in sketchbook designer the fast scribble line would be compressed so you need to slow down.It was fine as a vector line in the original DWG file as you can see on the left sketch of one of my Border Collies Mikado.

Santa's Sleigh

I suppose you have been wondering what I was sketching with the new Wacom Inkling.
It was some concepts for an image for this years Flexitec's Christmas card.Titled"look what the advanced concept elves have given me this year".
Looks pretty neat but the engine is a north pole designed coal burning job.

Inkling ...Pencil sketch..WOW

W0W LOOK WHAT I FOUND when you import your Inkling Biro sketch into Alias Sketchbook Designer it will open it as if it was done with a pencil, light soft lines and heavy dark lines. You can continue the sketch or export it as a tiff file into Sketchbook pro

RMIT student designs the future

RMIT University student Ryan Fonceca received some very positive comments from Tony Stolfo head of holden design and Guy Burgoyne head of holden advanced design while meeting with Myself and Ryan at the RMIT University Industrial Design final year exhibition.

Future thinking - RMIT Graduate on the move into industry.

Ryan Fonceca presented his Concept for single person transport for the future at the RMIT University Industrial Design Final graduation exhibition.
His work presentation consisted of concept sketches, finished concept renderings, Autodesk Alias surface models and final high res Alias Showcase animated images.
